Navy Seals Snipers 3 vs Somali Pirates 0

MK11 Navy Seals Snipers Rifle. It works.

That's what they used -- a gas operated semi auto rifle based on the M-16? I guess they were at pretty close range, so it wouldn't have made much difference, but snipers often prefer old school bolt-action rifles.

Why do they send unarmed ships into that area? This is surely an open invitation to what is happening (every day, it seems).

Is this another example of Western stupidity?

Presumably they used the MK11, a highly accurate and durable, precision semiautomatic sniper rifle that operates like an M16 or M4A1, and can deliver a 7.62mm round out to 1,500 yards. It is extraordinary how they hit three out of three at the same time - in choppy seas.

Indeed, the weapon appears to the the USN Mk 11 of Knight-Stoner descent. It's lineally descended from the original AR-10, which apparently has spawned battle rifle, sniper rifle, and squad automatic variants. An excellent choice for pirate hunting, but "not for cheapskates".

In the future it wold be better to just sink pirate ships on sight, and execute at sea captured pirates. Somalia has no government so there is no reason to expect that these attacks will stop on their own.

Ronduck,

What do you mean by "executed at sea"?

I think they were.

Recently a few captured Somali pirates were turned over to one of the other local African countries for trial. Instead those pirates should have been executed, which is what Britain did for so long.

I don't have a websource for my comment, I saw it on the front page of the Arizona Republic a week ago.

Another attack on an American ship today....An UNARMED American ship, carrying FOOD AID to some starving people in AFRICA, for no reason of profit, just the goodness of our hearts...

Doesn't compute. If we are going to put western merchantmen in harm's way for the sake of other people, we have to arm our sailors.
Which other people in the world would actually abuse their own people so stupidly? Furthermore, it looks more and more like weakness, on the global chessboard. Evil people will be emboldened everywhere.

What are you expecting, a little gratitude? Wrong address, Sir. Good should be done for its own sake.

Ronduck said...

If we didn't give them so much food aid there wouldn't be so many of them to rob us.

No not gratitude, although they probably are grateful. No, I want the merchant ships armed against the pirates so they can defend themselves.
