The key difference between bilinguals and monolinguals may be a heightened ability to monitor the environment. Bilinguals perform better in all tests and avoid dementia in the end.
They said bilinguals are smarter. Nothing about those who speak 3 or more languages - maybe more languages is confusing? :-)
Bilinguals are monolinguals who have the opportunity or were forced to study another language. For the study to be valid they have to compare bilinguals and monolinguals at the same IQ level. It may just be that the bilinguals are from a higher IQ bracket anyway. In Singapore, those who do not score well in the exams are exempted from studying a second language. So the causal chain could well be monolinguals who score less well in exams and thus quite possibly of lower IQ, perform worse than a bilingual person of higher IQ. The decisive factor here seems to be the IQ and social opportunities level.Ivan
Bilingualism is not learnt in school. You have to work on two languages.
I agree. I studied Spainsh for two years and I can't speak much of it.
Have to disagree; I speak and write Malay which I learned at school. I think in English and then translate my thoughts almost instantaneously. It is the same with my native Malayalam. In my case at least it appears that thoughts formed in my mind are mediated through the English language. You have a much more superior style of expression even though English may be your fifth language, so there may be other subtleties involved.Ivan
Yes, J writing in English (which is maybe his 4th language) is a better writer than many native speakers. Our edjukashunal system has falled so far that many high school graduates are no longer capable of writing a complete grammatical sentence in their native language. K
I did Latin for 10 years, but rarely get the opportunity to speak it. Perhaps I will start an email correspondence with the pope, on his return form Cuba. Anon.
That's the incredible thing about Hebrew - a little over a century ago, it was as dead a language as Latin. It had not been used as a daily vernacular for over 2,000 years (by the time of Jesus, Judeans had mostly switched to speaking Aramaic). And now it is a language that babies speak their first words in.K
Pareces flor de pelotudo.
Vos sí que sos oligo pero sin flor. Te voy a mandar el Diccionario del Argentino Exquisito para que mejores tu vocabulario.
